We are a growing community of people facilitating the
International Community Day on October 8th
Our mission is to host a global exchange of Communities on this particular day every year. We want to inspire ourselves to see thriving Communities all over the world!
This is a living movement everyone can join.
Why are we hosting Community-talk-Sessions on October 8th?
We, the initiators of the ICD, all experienced Communities in many different ways and asked ourselves what is actually a Community and what is different from other institutions?
Instead of defining what it could be, we want us all to experience community. We want to learn from individuals who master commoning already and hear from those who are struggling. To make this happen, we will provide a safe (digital) space where people can exchange, connect and grow.
Our value-add is to create a first-hand experience of how a global Community can start from scratch with the paradigm of Community.
What are the ICD-Hosts values?
We all love to
connect with people in a community-way
experience the unknown in a safe manner
draw the attention to communities in general
create “crystallization points” where people can gather authentically
contribute solutions how things could work better in this world
encourage ourselves and others to overcome difficulties
The ICD movement should not be about
something that a few should control
turning it into a scalable business
That a few should earn lots of money with it
putting it in the hands of few
By design and simultaneously emergent from the community, we sense these are a set of shared values and principles humans across the world embody.
On October 8th, 2020, in the middle of the global lock-down where people connected more and more digitally, there were lots of community events going on virtually. We thought, is this the International Community Day (ICD) going on? We hadn't done the research, but we thought it was time to start promoting something like this. We gathered some interested people and discussed our motivation to make the ICD happen.
Communities share Commons
Wikipedia: “The Commons is the cultural and natural resources accessible to all members of society, including natural materials such as air, water, and a habitable Earth. These resources are held in common even when owned privately or publicly. Commons can also be understood as natural resources that groups of people (communities, user groups) manage for individual and collective benefit. Characteristically, this involves a variety of informal norms and values (social practice) employed for a governance mechanism. Commons can also be defined as a social practice of governing a resource not by state or market but by a community of users that self-governs the resource through institutions that it creates.”
